How pay as you go electricity works

  • You load a balance. Add money online, by phone, or in cash at a payment center. That balance is electricity.
  • Your smart meter reports usage daily. Your balance goes down as you use power — no estimating and no month-end guessing game.
  • You get daily alerts. Text or email tells you what you used, what it cost, and what is left. Most customers use noticeably less power once they can actually see it.
  • You top up when you want. Add a little or a lot. There is no due date to miss — just keep your balance above zero.

Who prepaid lights are best for

  • Renters and frequent movers — no contract to break, and service moves when you do.
  • Anyone rebuilding credit — no credit check, and your electricity does not ride on your score.
  • Weekly or biweekly earners — pay a little with each paycheck instead of one large monthly hit.
  • Budget-focused households — daily visibility is the most effective way to cut usage.
  • Night owls and shift workers — pair pay as you go with our Free Nights Plan and pay a 0.0¢ energy charge from 9 PM to 5:59 AM.

What it costs to get started

There is no deposit. You make one initial payment, and every cent of it is electricity you will actually use. Rates vary by plan and service area — see the current plans and the Electricity Facts Label for exact pricing, or call 844-227-2648.

If money is tight this week, ask about our deferment assistance program: it can get your service activated with little or no upfront payment.

Paying and managing your account

Add funds 24/7 in your online account portal, by phone on the automated line at 844-227-2648, or in cash at any authorized Now Power payment center. Choose text, email, or both for your daily balance alerts. If your balance reaches zero, service can be interrupted with little notice — but with a smart meter you can pay and be reconnected any time during normal business hours, and you have five days to bring a past-due balance current before permanent disconnection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is pay as you go electricity?

Pay as you go — also called prepaid electricity or prepaid lights — means you pay for power before you use it instead of receiving a bill afterward. You load a balance, your smart meter reports daily usage, and you top up whenever you like.

Do prepaid lights cost more than a regular plan?

Rates vary by plan and service area, just as they do with postpaid plans. What prepaid removes is the deposit, the credit check, the contract, and the late-fee cycle. Check the Electricity Facts Label for the exact rate on any plan.

Do I need good credit for pay as you go electricity?

No. Now Power runs no credit check and requires no Social Security Number. Everyone is approved.

How do I know how much electricity I have used?

Your smart meter reports usage daily. You receive a daily alert by text or email showing usage, cost, and remaining balance, and you can see the detail any time in your online account.

What happens if my balance runs out?

Service can be disconnected with little notice once your balance falls below $0. With a smart meter you can add funds and be reconnected any time during normal business hours.

Can I switch from my current provider?

Yes, and you do not need to call them — Now Power notifies your current provider as part of enrollment.

Is pay as you go available where I live?

Now Power serves all deregulated areas of Texas, including Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth and more than 100 cities. Enter your ZIP code to confirm service at your address.
